Attractions

On the property
Guests can go for a row on the glistening farm dam or spend a relaxing afternoon bass fishing. The wide open spaces at Klein Paradijs are wonderful for playing all kinds of outdoor games. Birdwatching opportunities abound on the property (a list comprising 96 different types of birds sighted on the estate is available). For the energetic, climbing the Wolfhuiskop with its breathtaking view (274 m) will be a rewarding experience. Guests are also welcome to explore the local fynbos, accompanied by an accredited guide if desired. In January 2010 we finally inaugurated the new boule court.

Fynbos
The main attraction of the property is its fynbos or indigenous vegetation. Fynbos is the popular name for the shrub-like vegetation found at the southern tip of Africa. This region, which is also known as The Cape Floristic Region boasts a rich diversity of species. What is more, many of the plants are found nowhere else in the world. Fynbos is characterized by four main plant species: colourful proteas, bell-shaped ericas, reed-like restios and geophytes (plants with bulbs, tubers or corms). Most plants flower in winter and spring (June to September), but there is something to see at every time of the year. At Klein Paradijs, great efforts have been made to clear the land of invasive foreign plants and to restore it to its pristine condition. Recently, a part of the property was registered as a Voluntary Conservation Site with Cape Nature.

In the region
Between June and November, Southern Right Whales migrate from Antarctica to the sheltered bays of the south-west coast of South Africa to give birth to their young. At this time of the year, the Pearly Beach, Gansbaai and Hermanus areas offer excellent land-based whale watching opportunities. In addition, registered operators conduct boat trips to view the whales out in the sea.

Boat trips to see the Great White Shark are another popular excursion for visitors to the area. The more adventurous even choose to put on a diving suit and get in a cage attached to the boat for a close-up encounter with these awe-inspiring creatures.

The region of Pearly Beach and Gansbaai offers a host of leisure activities. The unspoilt beaches are known for their good angling spots. Guided walks, tractor rides, 4x4 excursions or horse riding on private land in the area can be arranged.
